A new appearance-based representation and recognition method for human motion is proposed. The motion history images [1] are extended by considering motion directions. The optical flow is separated into four components according to its direction, and four individual motion history images are generated from them. We call these motion history images as directional motion history images. The original motion history images sometimes erase its old motion by overwriting a new motion onto the past one. However, this can be avoided by using the proposed motion history images. The proposed human motion recognition method is based on Hu moments, however importance among four motion history images is considered. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed motion history images, recognition result of the proposed method was compared with the original method. According to the experimental results, the proposed motion history images improved the performance of the original motion history images in terms of recognition rate.
