Classification of Asian-specific acral lesions for Internet-based melanoma diagnostic system

In this paper, we report a classifier of Asian-specific acral volar (palm and sole area) melanomas and benign lesions for our Internet-based melanoma diagnostic system. Because almost a half of Asian melanomas are from these areas and an appearance of these lesions is completely different to that of other parts of lesions, the development of the specific classifier is important. We parameterized 135 dermoscopic images (108 nevi and 27 melanomas) of acral lesions and developed a linear diagnostic classifier. Our classifier achieved a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 93.5% under the cross-validation test.
