The purpose of this study was to describe narratives by expert nurses in critical care nursing and to clarify clinical grasp, clinical forethought and thinking-in-action by thinking in the situation and reasoning through transitions in patient condition. Participants comprised three expert nurses who were each either nursing chief or nursing leader. Length of clinical experiences for these nurses ranged from 11 to 16 years. The present paper focused on narratives of ethical dilemma. Exemplar was recorded from interviews or reports. The exemplar or narrative account illustrated how the nurse gains a clearer grasp of the situation by engaging in detective thinking. Examination of three case studies revealed that each critical care nurse was practicing care that is good for the patient and family while dealing with an ethical problem and dilemma. This paper suggests that the sharing of narratives represents an important element that supports decision-making for problem solving by critical care nurses.
