The words "office automation" first appeared in Japan about ten years ago, and today the abbreviation "OA" is an established element of our everyday vocabulary. The aim of this paper is to focus on current conditions and trends relating to OA communication and to examine the effect that this is having on business management in Japanese companies. In Japan, a new management system is appearing that places more importance on the dynamic rather than the static aspect of information. Companies are pursuing the dynamic aspect of information, dividing work into individual tasks and subdividing their organizations while injecting vitality into the dynamic interaction between each department and the upper levels of the company. This makes it possible to obtain the dynamic information that the company is looking for as a managerial resource. What companies need to survive in a market with diversified consumer behavior are networks permitting them to grasp dynamic information appropriately and which they can apply to their business management. The infrastructure of such networks consists of telecommunications networks and the various types of office automation equipment connected to them. Developing OA communication does not simply mean the linking of office equipment and telecommunications networks. Until now, these have existed as separate information-processing means but the link-up of these two elements represented by OA communication is making producing, handling, processing and transmitting information more efficient and is stimulating the development of business management in new directions. OA communication is connected to overall information processing within an organization. For example, technologically-speaking, it is possible to integrate all forms of management information that had previously been transmitted by interpersonal communication or writing into an OA communication system. Concepts for the base for such integrated information systems have been developed in the past few years. In this paper, I describe two examples relating to the formation of a base for integrated information systems. The first example is New Com Five Co. Ltd., established to carry out a joint project for establishing an integrated information system among five chemical companies in the Mitsubishi group. New Com Five provides the communications network service needed to establish an effective and economical in-house network for the five companies. The second example is Minato Mirai 21, a teleport-style harbor redevelopment project being carried out by the city of Yokohama. This regional plan for the advanced information age addresses the important question of establishing a telecommunications base that will make sophisticated OA communication possible through the effective integration of office equipment. To establish a management strategy capable of responding to diversified consumer needs, businesses in the advanced information age will have to switch to small-lot, diversified product lines. Thus, OA communication systems formed by linking office equipment and telecommunications networks will constitute a valuable base from which to obtain dynamic information.
