The Ferrox process is one of the wet processes for removing hydrogen sulfide from crude gases, and it is based on the following reactions, that is, the absorption of hydrogen sulfide with an aqueous suspension of ferric hydroxide, and the removal of sulfur from iron sulfide by an oxidation with air. 2Fe(OH)_3 + 3H_2S = Fe_2S_3 + 6H_2O 2Fe_2S_3 + 3O_2 + 6H_2O = 4Fe(OH)_3 + 6S In practice, however, the removal of hydrogen sulfide by this process has not always been satisfactory, and the regeneration of the absorption liquor has not so easily accomplished. The authors made the following studies both fundamental and industrial with the object of improving the process by eliminating the above disadvantages. Part I ; Study on the reaction between ferric hydroxide and hydrogen sulfide. (1) The rate of absorption of hydrogen sulfide by a suspension of ferric hydroxide was studied under various conditions, and the mechanism of the absorption was discussed. (2) Under various conditions the relative amounts of ferric and ferrous sulfide formed on the reaction between ferric hydroxide and hydrogen sulfide were determined by extracting the resulting sulfur with carbon tetrachloride. (3) The association constant of ferric ion with sulfate ion was measured spectrophotometrically over the ionic strength range from 0.1 to 1.0 at 20 ℃. (4) The rate of the reduction of ferric hydroxide in an acid suspension with hydrogen sulfide was measured, and the effects of pH, the co-existing ions, the kinds of acids, the surface area of ferric hydroxide, the temperature, etc. on this reaction were studied, and the mechanism of this reaction was explained. (5) By studying the reaction between ferric hydroxide and hydrogen sulfide in an alkaline solution, the solubility product of ferric sulfide was calculated, and the formation of sulfoferrite in a strongly alkaline solution was ascertained. (6) The oxidation rate of suspended iron sulfide with air was measured under various conditions, and the mechanism of this oxidation was discussed.
