In olden times, because of the high maternal mortality rate people generally considered pregnant women to have one foot already in the grave. So many pregnant women followed lives governed by various taboos, especially those concerning food, the aim being for the woman to give birth to a small baby and to bring it up to be a big healthy child. Pregnant women had to work hard in order to give birth to a small baby. They visited a shrine and prayed for an easy delivery to the guardian deity, namely Koyasusama, Santaisama, Yamanokamisama and so on.
