A project of surface photometry of galaxies was initiated in 1978 using the 105cm Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory. The Virgo Cluster and the Ursa Major Clouds were the first targets. In 1984 we decided to extend the project to include all the galaxies in the Revised Shapley-Ames Catalog accessible from the Kiso Observatory. We introduced two major facilities in order to carry out the project. One is a supermini-computer FACOM S-3500 system dedicated to astronomical image processing and the other is a PDS 2020GMS microdensitometer. This paper describes the aims, the results obtained so far, and the current status of the project.Galaxiessurface photometrylocal supercluster
