This study examined the patterns of avoidance and recognition in pedestrians as they passed a confederate. Specifically, the effect of condition (avoid, look, look and smile) on passing pedestrians was examined in a field study of 70 participants. The confederates adopted three conditions of varying levels of attention during the passes. Participants glanced at the confederate more frequently in the look condition. Female participants were more likely to look at a female confederate. Thirty-seven of seventy participants glanced at the confederate within the twelve feet observation zone. This suggests that the use of civil inattention is common in pedestrian passing.
