Observation, experiment, survey, and test are identified as scientific, that is, public and objective data collecting methods in social psychology. It is suggested that the experimental method is superior to the other methods in testing hypotheses and examining direct causal relationships among research variables, but experimentation in social psychology has some unique problems associated with using human subjects and must be supplemented by the other methods, especially by naturalistic observation. It is also suggested that the purposes and problems of research will primarily determine what kinds of methods should be selected. The correspondent relationships between purposes of research and data collecting methods are clarified.
