In foreign language education, the study of culture has often been seen as ancillary, secondary to reading, writing, speaking, listening. However, some see language and culture, not as distinct entities, but as inseparable, whole, and intricately interrelated (Flewelling, 1994; Pagcaliwagan 1997). Kramsch (1983) further purports that cross-cultural understanding occurs through interfacing with the culture and not merely learning about the culture. Such a process allows the language to become real and contextualized, giving students a sense of purpose and motivation in their study. During the summer of 2005, 26 students participated in a 16-day tour of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Before their tour, students were introduced through movies, lectures, the Internet, and books to various aspects of Southern culture. This training served to heighten students' awareness and readiness to gain a fuller, richer experience while in the U.S.. After arriving in the U.S., students attended lectures and visited historical sites that illustrated Civil War History, the Civil Rights Movement, music, food and sports. Most importantly, students gained their own personal insights through cross-cultural friendships. Students' feedback indicated that students viewed their experience as excellent and many of them expressed a desire to return for further touring and study.
