Since she emigrated from Northern Ireland to the United States in 1959, Eve Bunting has written more than 150 books for young readers and has enjoyed numerous awards and honors as a writer. Throughout her career, she has never shied away from addressing difficult issues, including racial prejudice, death, troubled families and war; at the same time, her work is infused with hope and beauty. It is sometimes very challenging to deal with socially sensitive topics in books for young readers. Bunting, however, has managed to conquer the difficultly and has succeeded in sharing with children her thoughts and experiences regarding this highly complicated world. Since 1997, I have translated three of her picture books into Japanese, including Smoky Night which was the winner of the 1995 Caldecott Medal. In this essay, with abundant examples of her recent work, and as her Japanese translator, I would like to show her courage in discussing difficult social issues, and examine her gift of hope presented in uncompromised storytelling.
