Short-Memory Properties in Traffic Analysis

Self-similarity is a well-established distribution property attributed to traffic from most environments available in today's Internet. According to self-similarity, only a few flows carry a major share of all traffic. This also applies to inter-arrival times between bursts of traffic in each flow. When long timeouts are used to aggregate flows, short-term bursts are completely obliterated. This paper looks into the issue of creating traffic profiles using relatively short-term memory, i.e. short flow aggregation timeouts. Short-term memory processes do not require additional resources at monitoring equipment and therefore can be easily implemented.
