Seasonal variations of temperature, salinity and sigma-t were observed in the southern coastal sea of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, related to the dumping activity there. The area of concern is influenced by a tropical monsoon climate with high rainfall from December to February, and an extended dry season from June to September. It was observed that the mixed layer depth (MLD) during January was about 110m, and that during April around 105m and that during July and December were around 60m and 80m, respectively. MLD variation was closely related to Mean Sea Level (MSL) variation with a negative correlation (MSL rising corresponding to MLD deepening). Moreover, tailing plumes were observed at 150m depth, then the tailing sank to 3000-4000m (Java Trench), but a part of them stayed at 150-200m depth. Distributions of tailings above the bottom showed that seasonal variation of currents played an important role in the spreading of the tailings over the area. In addition, it is recommended that the outlet of discharging pipeline must be below the pycnocline, not at 108m but 200m depth.
