The potassium hydroxide-catalyzed cyanoethylation of water in water as solvent and in water-dioxane and water-dimethylsulfoxide mixed solvents was kinetically investigated. The rate of reaction was extremely enhanced at the high concentration of aprotic dipolar solvent, dimethylsulfoxide. The mechanism of this solvent effect is briefly discussed.
