The patterns of locomotive activity in four species of Littorinidae were investigated on a rocky shore on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa (24°21′N, 124°9′E). The vertical position of the snails was high at spring tides and low at neap tides in Nodilittorina pyramidalis and Littoraria intermedia, but this tendency was not clear in L. undulata and L. pintado. All the four species moved up on rising tides and down on receding tides. The snails were always in the upper part of or just above the awash zone and never found completely submerged under water. At low tides, 20-30% of the snails were moving in rainy conditions, while less than 10% of the snails were active without rain in each species. The present and the previous data from different localities show that the proportion of littorinid snails submerged under water at high tides are less, and that of the snails moving in rain at low tides are more on tropical and subtropical shores than on temperate shores.
