The total credits the students of our college earned during their senior high school years are ranging from 4 to 34. This means that their ability of English and their will to learn English or their stage of English learning are so varied that it is rather difficult for a teacher to produce a desirable atmosphere for the English lessons, especially when there are over 50 students in one class. In order to improve the negative or inactive attitude of the students in a large class, the teacher divides the stories in the textbook into many parts and makes each student put the respective parts into Japanese. He requires the students to visit him before they hand in the translation and ask him questions if they find any sentences which are beyond their comprehension. The teacher takes this occasion to talk with the student personally about the problems he/she has in studying English. to give him/her personal guidance, and at the same time to encourage the student to study harder. This talk with the students has brought about some desirable results, that is to say a kind of rapport in the lessons thereafter.
