The affinity of the moss floras between Japan and Taiwan is discussed. A comparison of the mosses recorded from Japan and Taiwan revealed 544 taxa in common to both regions, which is 43% of the Japanese and 62% of Taiwanese moss floras. The species lacking in Japan are mainly tropical species, while those lacking in Taiwan are circumboreal species. The species common to both regions include several elements of distribution: East Asiatic element (33%), palaeotropic element (24%), circumboreal element (16%), cosmopolitan (10%), Sino-Japanese element (6%) and others.
