A comparison of the mosses recorded from Japan and Peninsular Malaya revealed 106 species in common to both regions, which is 9% of the Japanese and 22% of Peninsular Malayan moss floras. The species lacking in Japan are mainly tropical species, while those lacking in Peninsular Malaya are circumboreal species or east Asiatic species. The species common to both regions include several elements of distribution : palaeotropic element (73%), pantropical element (7%), Sino-Japanese element (5%), circumboreal element (4%), cosmopolitan (2%) and others.
