Photographs of the earthquake that attacked Tokyo and Yokohama areas in 1894 are kept in the collections of the National Science Museum. The forms of the photographs are albumen papers, lantern slides and dry plates. Including these of the NSM, probably a considerable number of photographs were taken just after the event for the use at the former Imperial Earthquake Investigation Committee, and some of them were copied out for illustrations in the reports of the 1894 earthquake. Almost all of the original plates may have been lost; the twenty-two photographs reported here could only be scarce survivals showing damage after the earthquake at that time. Hence, these photographic materials of the NSM are thought to be valuable for the purpose of re-investigating disasters of the historical earthquake.
