The authors examine how a genre approach is valuable for teaching the language of research. They contend that students need to know not just how to function in everyday situations but to be able to understand, and in some cases construct for themselves, the language found in more specialized or academic areas. The authors argue that using the genre approach while conducting interview surveys and writing summaries of results is a way to help students make the step from language used in more everyday situations to being able to construct language used in academic contexts. The authors point out that a genre approach based on a functional model of language; in this case, systemic functional linguistics can help students to understand how these texts are structured and the distinctive grammatical patterns that are present. Finally the authors analyze a model text and look at the distinctive language features and patterns.
