This paper explores the concept of literacy, how it has been defined and the metaphors that have molded popular ideas about it. We also provide an overview of theories of learning and linguistics focusing on how these have shaped our ideas about what it means to be literate in one's first language, and moreover, enabled us to extend our understanding about just what becoming literate in a foreign language entails.
