In Vitro Variation of the Smooth Phase of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to the Rough Phase after Exposure to Shampoo

To determine effects of commercial shampoos on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, smooth phase strains of P. aeruginosa were exposed to appropriately diluted shampoos, since it was previously reported that shampoos used in barber shops and hand-washing liquids provided for public use were heavily contaminated with various species of bacteria. The smooth (s) phase of P. aeruginosa was changed to the rough phase (R) when exposed to commercial shampoo. Two smooth strains employed were changed to the rough phase by 7 or 8 out often shampoos. All rough phase strains isolated, regardless of the original O antigen-type of the parent strains, were agglutinated only with the monoclonal antibody against O antigen type M. With a shampoo, the S→R phase variation was observed at the frequency of 80%. The phase variation could not be readily observed unless the smooth phase of P. aeruginosa was allowed to grow under the presence of shampoo at 37℃, not at 4℃. Although ingredients supplemented in commercially available shampoos are not verified, biological significance of the phase variation in shampoo in regard to human cells remains to be investigated. Variation of P. aeruginosa by certain substance(s) added to shampoo seems to be the main reason(s) for the onset and maintenance of bacterial contamination.
