Academic achievement correlates poorly with clinical performance of physicians, so it is probably more important to select college students for medical school admission who will be superior physicians than to select those who will be excellent medical students. Before such selection criteria can be developed, a valid descreption of a superior physician must be determined. The list of 87 clusters of positive traits of a superior physician generated by Price and his colleagues (1971) was used as the substrate for our study. The list was placed in random order and distributed to students of College of Medicine (n=154). Ss. were 87 male and female 2nd grade and 67 male and female 5th grade students of College of Medicine. They were asked to rate each cluster of qualities for the degree to which it can be taught (by lecture, example, role modeling, etc.), using a scale of 1-10 (1=nonteachable; 10=easily teachable). They were also asked to rate each cluster of qualities for its importance in a superior physician, on a scale of 1-5 (1=unimportant; 5=extremely important), the same scale Sade and his coworkers (1985) used. The t test for 87 qualities revealed that 5th grade students were less teachable than 2nd grade students.
