For the purpose of the investigation, in August 1990 a study was made of 89 males and females aged 34-79 living in Bage, Ivoti and Porto Alegre in the province of Rio Grande do Sul in the Federal Republic of Brazil. The investigation consisted of a questionnaire and a follow-up interview. The questionnaire consisted of 72 items concerning health, eating habits, family relations and religious behavior, as well as old age. Both questionnaire and interview were conducted in Japanese. The study found Japanese emigrants to Brazil after World War II to be very accepting of and positive toward old age. As for the other items, these will be dealt with in a separate paper.
