In this paper I try to discuss some of the features of grammar and usage of Canadian English, especially in the Vancouver area. For this purpose I conducted a survey of 47 Canadian citizens in that area. I have also drawn on citations from Canadian newspapers, magazines, and literary and scholarly works in order to cover a wider geographical area as well as to encompass a broader range of styles. The results show that there are few grammatical features which can be called "distinctively Canadian," but that many Canadians follow a mixture of British and American usages, with a strong leaning toward the American pattern in their informal daily life. Although Canada has had strong historical ties with Britain, the commercial and cultural influence of the United States has been increasing in recent years, and as a result Canadian English seems likely to approximate even further to American English and to develop a still larger common core of North American English.
