It is a well-known fact that Canadian spelling is a mixture of British and American usage. In this paper I try to clarify Canadian preferences, based on a survey conducted with 47 Canadian citizens in the Vancouver area. The results, which match those of Scargill (1974) and Ireland (1979), show a fairly predictable pattern of choice. It is also shown that American usage is widely accepted in informal daily life, while British usage is preferred on more formal or official occasions.
