In this paper I try to discuss some of the features of the vocabulary of Canadian English, especially in the Vancouver area. For this purpose I have conducted a survey with 37 respondents in that area. As well, I have drawn on citations from newspapers, magazines, and literary and scholary works in order to cover a much wider geographical area. The results show that there are a few words which can be labelled "Canadian," but that in their daily vocabulary many Canadians follow a mixture of British and American usages, with a strong leaning toward the American pattern. As a result of the close commercial and cultural ties between Canada and the United States, the influence of American on Canadian vocabulary has been strong and widespread, and this trend will probably continue in the future as economic cooperation between the two countries increases.
