The current status of invasive intraoperative hemodynamic monitoring at Kitasato University Hospital was evaluated by retrospective analysis of 3347 anesthesia charts during recent 6 months from April through September, 1983. Intra-arterial pressure (AP) in 16%, central venous pressure (CVP) in 26%, and pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) in 8% were monitored, respectively. Modalities of invasive hemodynamic monitoring, especially CVP were increased in elderly patients. PAP was more utilized in cases when operating time exceeded 5 hours. Combined utilization of AP with CVP and/or PAP was often noted in induced hypotension for relatively good-risk patients. Indications of these modalities and the future of hemodynamic monitoring in the operating room were briefly reviewed with recent bibliography.
