This paper reviews Models of Language Acquisition: Inductive and Deductive Approaches edited by Broeder and Murre (2000). Models of Language Acquisition is a collection of 12 papers written by researchers working in the fields of linguistics, cognitive science, psychology and computer science. The book covers the issues of "words" (four papers), "word formation" (five papers) and "word order" (two papers), preceded by an overview of the current issues in language acquisition. The researchers are interested in computational modelling of language acquisition, particularly in machine learning simulating the function of neural networks, and testing new solutions to a range of questions in language acquisition. Giving a summary of each study, we assessed whether the modelling presented has validity or not in view of language acquisition theories and accessibility of experimental paradigms. We concluded that computational modelling has more merit than traditional research approaches in the study of language acquisition in that modelling enables researchers to realize methodological rigor and plausible simulation of cognitive processes that they aim to substantiate.
