In this thesis, we examine Stendhal's relationship with Shakespeare in his adolescence, during which he re-read Shakespeare's plays which he was fond of and enjoyed in his boyhood. During this time, he often read them in the original form, studying and analyzing them, for he intended to be a dramatist, and he tried to create theatrical works, even using them as a model. Taking notes, he considered their dramaturgy, plots, characters and all other elements in those plays. By examining these notes of his own, we can see that Stendhal reconstructed his conception of Shakespeare and made it clearer than in boyhood. At the same time, we can also see that Stendhal became more conscious of his affection and attachment for Shakespeare; he found salvation in this Elizabethan playwright during his melancholic periods and he even declared Shakespeare his own contemporary, which proves how he felt an affinity with Shakespeare.
