Stendhal's evaluation of Rossini's opera 'Otello' changed dramatically during the time from its early performances in 1817 towards the 1820s when it's stages were applauded in Paris. Stendhal at first didn't estimate highly Rossini's 'Othello', because he had seen in Shakespeare's 'Othello' the personification of passionate love and identified himself with the hero. Moreover, he appraised the English dramatist's dramaturgy which represented the analytic vicissitudes of man's passion-jealousy. Stendhal was disappointed with Rossini's melodramatic dramaturgy and his rather light music. But over the course of time, moved by Madame Pastas exquisite performances as Desdemona, Stendhal began to see Rossini's 'Othello' from a different point of view; he realized that the true protagonist in Rossini's opera was the heroin Desdemona, and viewed in this light, Rossini profusely and to his heart's content expressed the heroin's sentiments.
