I have so far twice examined finite and non-finite clauses in Early Middle English. However, the first paper was based on a very limited corpus, and the second attempt was a part of my Syntax and Style in Early English-Finite and Non-finite Clauses c.900-1600 (Tokyo : Kaibunsha, 1979) (abbreviated to SSEE below), in which I made the corpus much larger. Nevertheless, as a part of the corpus in SSEE, I analyzed Ancrene Riwle (Nero) instead of Ancrene Wisse (abbreviated to Ancr. Below) reproduced from Ms. Corpus Christi College Cambridge 402, though the latter is generally accepted to be a better manuscript. In this paper, I shall therefore reexamine the clauses in question, while focusing on Ancr. In Ancr. The proportion of infinitives to finite clauses is lower than in any extract of The Katherine Group. As D. Bethurum (1935) notes, the movement of Ancr. Is simple and direct, and its pithy sentences on the whole are little involved. This statement, together with that of C. Clark (1966) about style and loanwords, support my view that the language of Ancr. Is not identical to that of The Katherine Group.
