With the exception of the verbal noun, three Aelfric-Wulfstan texts contain a lower proportion of non-finite clauses than four preceding Alfredian texts, though there can be observed a steady rise of their proportion to finite clauses from Old English to early Modern English. In other words, non-finite clauses in Aelfric-Wulfstan corpus go against the historical development of the clauses in question. This reverse movement is due to four factors. Firstly, Aelfric's Lives of Saints, to some extent, possesses the stylistic features of chronicles, in that Aelfric outlines saints' lives briefly in chronological order. Secondly, Wulfstan is dependent on the use of finite clauses for the necessity of clarity for listeners. Thirdly, this is due to Wulfstan's lack of participles, and the infrequent use of them in The Slicking Homilies, due to the Anglicization of the Latin sources. Lastly, the graphic arts of Aelfric's time, which were quite simple, should be taken into consideration.
