This paper gives a review of studies mainly with electron microscopy on the smoke particles produced by evaporating metals in an atmosphere of an inert gas at low pressures. A typical smoke consisted of inner zone, intermediate zone and outer zone. The size and shape of particles varied with the collection positions as well as with the evaporation conditions such as the gas pressure and evaporation temperature. A conclusion has been drawn that the coalescence of particles plays an important role besides the ordinary growth in the vapor. The particles of some of metals had the crystal structure different from that of bulky substance. The relation between the shape and the crystal structure of particles is being made clear.
