Thirteen strains of eight varieties of Trichoderma spp. were tested for their stimulation effect on seed germination and their growth-promotion effect on tomato plants and eggplants. For the growth of tomato plants, T. viride (IAM 5141) was the most effective, followed by T. harzianum (IFO 30543), T. harzianum (Th-58), and T. viride (IFO 30498). In the case of eggplants, the strain most effective on seed germination was T. polysporum (IFO 9322), followed by T. album (AHU 9459), and T. hamatum (IFO 31291), and also the fresh weight of eggplants was the heaviest with T. viride (IAM 5141) followed by T. album (AHU 9459), T. koningii (IFO 30544), and T. album (AHU 9465). An in vitro experiment to determine whether the growth promoting effect is due to the culture filtrate or the fungus body in Trichoderma spp., showed that the effect existed in the fungus body, and also the test on autoclaved soil confirmed that fungus body were effective in plant growth promotion. The best effect was obtained when the Trichoderma suspension was added at 5% of the weight of soil. In non-autoclaved soil, also, the Trichoderma suspension plot showed a positive effect on seed germination, and a concentration of 5% was found to be most suitable.
