This paper discusses investigations on the effects of polarizances of the polarizer, analyser, and monochromators upon the Faraday rotation measured by the double beam infrared Faraday spectrometer, which was constructed and reported by the author previously. The Faraday rotation in the specimen measured by the double beam infrared Faraday spectrometer is given by the rotation of the analyer by whose orientation the intensity of light passing through a polarizer, the specimen, and the analyser is let equal to the intensity of the light passing through another polarizer oriented perpendicular to the former, the specimen and the analyser. With due consideration for the facts that polarizers employed in the infrared region are not complete and monochromators act also as incomplete polarizers, the intensity of light passing through a series of four incomplete polarizers oriented in arbitrary directions is examined. By an application of this result to the measuring method of the Faraday rotation described above, the relations among the rotation of the analyser, the Faraday rotation and the polarizances of the analyser and main-monochromator is obtained. If the polarizance of the analyser is not 1 and the polarizance of main-monochromatar is not zero, the rotation of the analyser does not coincide with the Faraday rotation in the specimen. Another measuring method by which these rotations are made coincide with each other is suggested. The orientation of polarizers which gives the maximum difference between the intensities of light passing through one polarizer and through another upon the non-equilibrium orientation of the analyser varies with the polarizances of the polarizers and fore-monochromator. However, the improvement of the accuracy of measurement obtained by the most favourable orientation of polarizers from the case of the conventional 45° orientation to the horizontal is rather small. A new method of determining polarizances of polarizers and monochromator is also described in this paper.
