R. Descartes asserted that the mechanism of the propagation of light is an action or an inclination to move (inclination a se mouvoir) of subtle matter. For him an action or an inclination to move means an idealistic mechanical process that suits the most representative law of dynamics. On the other hand, he took it a glorious success that he demonstrated the law of reflection and refraction of light, nevertheless it stands on a peculiar hypothesis which claims that in general speed of a motion is independent of its determination or its direction. Naturally, he believed not only that this peculiar hypothesis is the most remarkable and the most general principle of dynamics, but all his laws of shock must be written to fit with his optical theory that is to prove the law of reflection and refraction of light. The author attempts to criticise the Cartesian laws of shock from this point of view and to bring to light the whole significance of his laws in spite of its many fallacies.
