An Improvement of Critical Current Density in Bronze-processed Nb_3Sn(Low-T_c Superconducting Materials Research)

Effects of the Ge addition to the matrix on the structure and superconducting properties on the bronze-processed Nb_3Sn have been studied. The simultaneous addition of Ta, Hf or Ti to the Nb core has been also performed. The critical current density, Jc, of Nb_3Sn has been appreciably increased by the Ge addition. The simultaneous addition of 0.5 at% Ge to the matrix and 1 at% Ta to the core enhances the Jc of Nb_3Sn at 12 T by one order of magnitude. The increase in the Jc of Nb_3Sn seems to be attributed to the grain refinement of Nb_3Sn by the Ge addition. The formation of thin layer richer in Ge is observed in the matrix adjacent to the Nb_3Sn layer, which may be effective for reducing the proximity effect between Nb_3Sn filaments in the case of AC use.
