Two-step Stress-induced Martensitic Transformation In Cu-Zn-Al Alloy Single Crystals

Two kinds of stress-strain (S-S) curve, stress-drop-type and two-stage-type, are observed in the tensile test of Cu-Zn-Al single crystals associated with the two-step stress-induced martensitic transformation, β→β'_1→α'_1. Having analysed various S-S curves for specimens with e/a=1.40〜1.47, variations in the critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS), τ_β for β_1→β'_1, and τ_α for β'_1→α'_1, are obtained with respect to the temperature. It is found that (i) τ_β increases steeply with temperature whereas τ_α has a slight negative temperature dependence, (ii) the CRSS, τ'_α for α'_1 →β'_1 increases with e/a as well as τ_α and (iii) the value of τ'_α is negative for specimen having lower e/a-values and increases to positive one with e/a.
