Field Ion Microscopic Studies on G. P. Zones in Al-Gu Alloys

Atomic arrangements in pure Al and Al-4 wt.% Cu alloy have been Examined by field ion microscopy. Unisig a technique of well controlled successive field evaporation, the three dimensional shape of the G. P. zones in Al-4 wt.% Cu alloy has been examined. It has been found that the G. P. zones in the alloy aged at 130℃ for 1000 minutes are Cu-rich platelet of complex shape containing many ledges and holes, but in the alloy aged at 130℃ for 15 days, the zones consit of two parallel Cu-rich platelets separated by the matrix Al atoms.
