Variations of the Young's modulus and the internal friction during the aging of the supersaturated solid solution of 20 weight percent silver in aluminium has been examined on polycrystalline specimens by the high frequency method at about 13 kilocycles per second; both isothermal aging curves and heating curves have been obtained. It has been found that the formation of the Guinier-Preston zone results in decrease of the Young's modulus, where asprecipitation of the new phase results in increase of it. The results have been discussed based on the point of view that thc formation of the Guinier-Preston zone is not a preliminary stage of the precipitation process. The effect of the agingon the internal friction measured at the room temperature has been found negligible. Further, temperature variations of the Young's modulus and the internal friction have been examined on the pure aluminium specimen in comparison with those of the present alloy.
