2-Azido-5-nitrotropone was synthesized by the reaction of 2-hydrazino-5-nitrotropone with nitrous acid. The azido compound is very unstable and tends to convert to an intractable substance with the evolution of one mole of nitrogen. The reaction of the azido compound with various amino acids gave the corresponding N-troponyl amino acids.
