On the Purification of Sodium Cyanate by Liquid Ammonia

A purification process of sodium cyanate has been attempted. Necessary experiments with regard to this procedure have been performed as follows : (1) The specific gravities of NaCNO, NaCNO-NH_4NO_3-NH_3 and NaCNO-NH_4Cl-NH_3 at 0〜30℃ were measured. (2) The rate of conversion of ammonium cyanate into urea in liquid ammonia at 0〜30℃ was estimated. (3) The solubilities of sodium cyanate in liquid ammonia at 0〜45℃ and in the ammonieous solution of ammonium nitrate or chloride at 0℃ were also measured. Being based on those results the purification of sodium cyanate from impure raw material was tried by the lixiviation method using ammonium salt solutions. In consequence of this study it is concluded that the purification of sodium cyanate is effectively carried-out using ammonium nitrate solution at 0℃ or below.
