The reaction between excess of nitrous oxide and a liquid ammonia solution of metallic sodium to prepare sodium azide was studied. At first, the velocity of sodium amide formation in a stainless steel vessel from liquid ammonia solution of sodium and then the azide formation by the action of nitrous oxide was studied and recognized that sodium in liquid ammonia did not changed directly to the azide without passing through the amide.
