The results of the present experiment are summarized below : (1) Young's moduli of elasticity of single crystals of nickel and cobalt, its length is so short as about 1 cm, were measured by a new microscopic method at room temperature. (2) Young's moduli of single crystals of nickel, axes of which coincide with the principal axes[100], [110]and [111], measured are E_<[100]>=1.3_8×10^<12> dyne/cm^2, E_<[110]>=2.1_5×10^<12> dyne/cm^2, E_<[111]>=2.6_2×10^<12> dyne/cm^2. (3) The principal elastic parameters determined by the use of the volume compressibility of nickel, whose value is 0.535×10^<12> cm^2/dyne, are S_<11>= 0.72_4×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne, S_<11>= 0.27_2×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne, S_<44>=0.95_6×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne. (4) The rigidity moduli of the principal directions computed from the principal elastic parameters determined above are n_<[100]>=1.04_7×10^<12> dyne/cm^2, n_<[110]>=0.67_9×10^<12> dyne/cm^2, n_<[111]>=0.60_9×10^<12> dyne/cm^2. (5) Young's moduli of single crystals of cobalt, axes of which are parallel to and perpendicular to the hexagonal axis, calculated from the data of three specimens having different orientations from each other are E_〓=1.9_6×10^<12> dyne/cm^2, E_〓=1.6_0×10^<12> dyne/cm^2. (6) The principal elastic parameters determined by the use of the linear compressibility of cobalt, whose value is 0.181×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne, are S_<11>=0.62_2×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne, S_<33>=0.50_8×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne, S_<44>=1.92_8×10^<-12> cm^1/dyne, S_<12>=-0.27_7×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne, S_<13>=-0.16_3×10^<-12> cm^2/dyne. (7) The rigidity moduli of the principal directions computed from the above determined principal elastic parameters are n_〓=0.52_0×10^<12> dyne/cm^2, n_〓=0.53_7×10^<12> dyne/cm^2. (8) The relations between the elastic constants C_<ik>, C_<12>=C_<44> for nickel and C_<11>=3C_<12>, C_<12>=C_<44> for cobalt do not hold. In conclusion, the present writers wish to express their hearty thanks to the under mentioned persons for their kindness in preparating the specimens of cobalt. Prof. Dr. H. Masumoto gave them a parent crystal, the late Prof. Dr. K. Takane cut out the specimens from the parent crystal and Dr. M. Takagi determined the orientation of the crystal.
