We observed the effect of cadmium(Cd) on growth and survival rates of silkworm, by feeding commercialized artificial foods in which we mixed 6 different kinds of Cd concentration (control, 5ppm, 1Oppm, 20ppm, 30ppm, and 50ppm), We bred three generations of a silkworm in the same Cd concentration environment. The main results of our individual-based experiments are, 1) Cd seems to elongate the time period of each larval instar, especially, the effect is much stronger for younger (the first to the third) instars than later ones. 2) The survival rate was dramatically decreased between Cd concentration 10ppm and 20ppm. 3) We found that Cd was most accumulated in the stomach among some organs including head, and no Cd in cocoon. Cd concentration in the stomach of the second generation was almost twice the first generation, and this result was consistent with the result using the butterfly Pieris rapae last year.
