At present, the percentage of military stores for the Japanese Self-Defence Force(SDF) in the Japanese aircraft producion is lower than 50%, though this percentage was more than 80% in the first half of 1990s. In Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI), one of the largest fuselage manufacturers, aircraft production for SDF have decreased by the close of production of Patrol P3C and Fighter F15 in the latter part of 1990s. At the same time, production for civilian use have risen by the increase of Boeing passenger plane production. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the interfirm linkage of the KHI's Gifu plant, a special plant of the aircraft and space department, in the period of increase of civilian demand. The Gifu plant is located in the northern part of the Nagoya metropolitan region, the main aircraft manufacturing area in Japan. KHI has considerably reduced his function as the nucleus of interfirm linkage in the period of decrease of military stores. At present, KHI is the nucleus of interfirm linkage in the production of SDF's Trainer T4, whose production techniques was developed by Japanese companies, and three kinds of helicopter, which contains military plane and civilian plane. But output of these planes is substantially less than that of P3C, which KHI produced as nucleus of interfirm linkage. The producion of Fighter Support F2 in which Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) is the nucleus of interfirm linkages, started after the end of the production of P3C. In this business, the linkage between MHI and KHI are not so close as the case of F15. Because more fuselage manufacturers participate in the production of F2. B777 of Boeing passenger plane, which is leading the increase of civilian demand, is produced under an international joint development agreement. But the most important part of development and final assembly are done in the USA under the instruction of Boeing. By the growth of B777 production, the Gifu plant of KHI is being connected even closely to Boeing, which is becoming into monopolistic leading company in the world aircraft industry. In the production of H-2 and H-2A, the latest model of rocket, Japanese fuselage, engine and equipment manufactureres form the interfirm linkage using the domestically developed production techniques. But KHI don't hold an important position in the rocket production. In the first half of 1990s, the Gifu plant of KHI had three kinds of inter firm linkage: (1) international linkages with fuselage manufacturers in the USA; (2)national linkages with fuselage, engine, and equipment manufacturers located mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan region, one of the aircraft manufacturing area in Japan; and (3) local linkages with other fuselage manufacturers and KHI subcontractors in the Nagoya metropolitan region. The substance of these linkages has been changed in the latter part of 1990s. The first type of linkage is being strengthened by the increase of Boeing passenger plane production. Linkage (2) is becoming weak by the declining of KHI's nucleus function. On linkage (3), connection between KHI and MHI has been weaken by the close of F15 production, though KHI's linkage with his subcontractors is maintained. In the increase of civilian demand, KHIs aircraft production is being incorporated more closely into the international linkage, which is controled by US aircraft companies. On the other side, KHI's domestic linkage isn't developing both inside the Nagoya metropolitan region and with the other aircraft manufacturing areas.
