Creating opportunities for students to talk in the classroom is a question not only of devising appropriate activities and tasks and providing language and content input. Success also depends on the skills of the teacher in handling the real-time managerial demands involved. In medium- to large-sized classes (30-60 and over), these demands can be quite formidable. In this practical article, an approach to the physical aspects of organising pair and small group speaking activities in such classes is described. A rationale for adopting such a procedure is outlined first.
