Conversational styles differ between speech communities. This paper illustrates how different communities display differences in the strategies they use to manage smooth conversational interactions and the linguistic and non-linguistic resources they employ. The strategies include: managing the physical space within which the conversationalists are located; means to achieve synchrony in turn taking through the use of prosodies and rhetorical structure; interruptions, simultaneous speech and the management of silence in turn taking; the maintenance of conversational flow through the use of feedback and collaboratory structural patterns; and the encouragement of participation through collaboratory interactional styles. It is the belief of the author that knowledge about differences in conversational style and conversational management can contribute to conversational partners becoming less judgmental of each other's behaviour, which in turn can reduce intercultural misunderstandings and communication breakdowns.
