Coarsening-upwards cyclic sedimentation in various tectotopes is reviewed and its geological significance is summarized. The sedimentation of this type is, as a rule, developed in active delta-growing areas regardless of tectonic situations at the site of deposition. Factors controlling the coarsening-upwards cycle involve (1) tectonic, (2) eustatic, and (3) sedimentary ones, of which clearly defined eustatic control of the cyclicity through the geological column is rather restricted to Quaternary deltas on continental margins where glacial influence was important. In most cases, both tectonic and sedimentary controls seem to be more significant. Particularly, rhythmic tectonic movements in forming the coarsening-upwards cyclicity in geosynclinal belts may define the natures of plate-tectonics of lithospheres. To sum up the coarsening-upwards, sedimentation represents a regressive phase of deposition and should be evaluated as an effective indicator of deltaic sedimentary environments.
